I thought I would talk a little about my growth spurt and would love to hear others
Anyway back in the day, 11 year old me decided that it was time to get BIG. I had never been a small kid, pretty average i guess, having stretched from 4ft10 to 5ft4 over the space of two years. However my body was sick of waiting and decided to kick things into gear quickly and in the space of six to nine months this little boy got very very BIG.
I don’t remember that much of the spurt just that i knew i was growing and was growing fast. I was the biggest boy in my class, towering over everyone who ranged from 4ftsomething to 5ft6 at a stretch. I looked out of place, i felt weird. I Remember getting funny looks from this older man who told me i should be hanging out with kids my own age, mistaking me for some tall teenager standing amongst a bunch of little kids rather than just another normal boy who just happened to be bigger than everyone else his age.
At the time there were things that were very difficult about growing to this size but being big for my age had its benefits and gave me lots of attention.
One thing i remember very clearly about my spurt was growing through clothes very quickly. This pissed my mum off a lot as she had to buy me so much stuff until it got to the point where she had to start asking to borrow things from people because we couldn’t afford it.
I remember as i got closer to my 12th birthday i was outgrowing my stepdads size 8s very quickly and mum being in a panic as I needed new black shoes for school photos. My cousin Paul, who was 24/25 at the time was happy to help as he was one of the biggest guy i knew at the time at 5ft10. He had huge size10s and there was no way i would go through two sizes so quickly. Although they were a lil big for my size9 shaped feet they were much better than the little ones that too tight and uncomfortable.
Two months later though and having stretched to 5ft9/10 and a half my feet had become too big for these adult shoes. At size 11 (a month or so away from my final size of 12s) my feet were now bigger than my adult cousin.
Soon Big Foot became one of the many nicknames i got at school and who could blame my classmates who were still in the child size sections shopping for things. My size 11/12s look ridiculous compared to my friends 3s and 5s and even my school teachers feet were dwarfed by me. I was now the same size as my age and i got loads of attention as a result. My mum was happy that i didn’t grow anymore and so was i at the time.
