Misjudged giants heights thinking they were shorter

I’m usually good with judging people’s height. However today I got tricked. So I was with my son at a park’s basketball court and on other side was a group of taller looking teenagers that had just finished playing. One of them looked a few inches taller than me and I predicted he would become much taller when he reaches his full height as an adult. He later walked over to exit the court and passed us and I was so shocked at how tall he was, he wasn’t just a few inches taller but at least a 14 inches taller (I think he is 6’11). I was more shocked at how I so misjudged his height as he stood by from the other side of the court. Did anyone have a similar experience? and can you explain to me why I misjudged so badly.

I had a similar experience earlier this year. Saw a dude in a crowd who at first I thought was maybe around 6’8. As I got closer to him a noticed he was definitely taller. Turns out he was 7’2! Depth perception can be deceiving.

As they approach they start looking taller and taller, then they stare down and I have to bend my neck all the way up to make eye contact lol.

Back when I was in college, I was walking through the skyway, and saw a couple of guys walking towards me. I wasn’t paying much attention, except the one guy seemed to be a lot shorter than the other one. I’m fairly short and thought the shorter one was around my height. I really wasn’t paying much attention and looking at other stuff. Suddenly I realized the shorter guy was tall and the other one was a giant.

A while later I was sitting in this little coffee shop and saw the guy go into this little shop set up in the hallway selling calendars or something like that. I had a good spot to watch without feeling like a stalker. His whole head was above the racks. From my position it looked like his nose was above the top of a door frame of a boarded up area. At one point a short older man came around a corner of the display and ran smack into the tall guy’s chest. He was flustered and his wife started fussing with him. That part was really funny.

Later that day I learned he was part of a basketball team that was traveling in our area. I don’t remember his name or the team he played for, but I think they said he was somewhere around 7-4. At some point I realized the flustered older man whose wife was fussing over him was so much taller than me. I would have been looking at his stomach.

I get this sometimes lol because I have a babyface and am kinda skinny.
It's usually funny when I see people start to notice. I usually sense it when it happens, I think.
I find attention for my height awkward but this scenario is one of the more fun ones.
